I have been extremely busy, for it being so early in the snowboard season. I am falling behind in my blogging….

Well with no pass for Whistler Blackcomb this year my snow options are limited….. John Scarth and I headed back up into the Squamish Backcountry in search of the white room!

We found it pretty quick… just not on the Snowboards!!

Squamish Backcountry Media Day!

Day two: headed up into the Squamish Back-country with long time snowboard photographers John Scarth and Jeff Patterson for some early season snowboard laps. We lucked out the snow was still soft and it was a bluebird day! It is pretty amazing that we can be shredding powder so close to home. Here are some photos from the day!

Here we go again!! It is November 24th and winter has started to settle in. I was lucky enough to embark on a super early season backcountry day with a couple of seasoned veterans. The snow was pretty good for being so early in the season. There was not much visibility so we found a nice little bowl filled with fresh snow and just took turns shuttling each other for some great early season snowboard laps. Being a photographer these days are extra special, because later in the season you are too busy shooting photos to actually snowboard and hardly even bring your board out most of the time. I can’t believe how lucky I am and get to participate in such an incredible experience and can’t wait to see where this season takes me!

Tales from the backcountry photo contest

As the temperature gets cooler and the days get shorter, everyone’s focus starts to turn back to winter and the adventure around the corner. I am really excited that leading up to this winter I am part of this years Out Of Bounds photo exhibit. Each year Whistler Arts Council puts on a photo contest/ exhibit for emerging backcountry photographers in British Columbia, which is on display for the month of October at Millennium Place.

I feel very lucky to have my work hanging amongst so many talented photographers and can’t wait to get up there to check out all of the work. The opening night for the exhibit is on October 11th, doors open at 7pm. Here is one of the 6 photos I have in the show, It is of Adam Chuntz up in Chocolate Bowl.

Shooting Day!

As we are finally getting closer to winter I am finding I have a bit more time to shoot personal projects and sit in front of the computer, so I hope I will be updating more regularly! One of my co-workers (I am a Sous Chef in the summers) is an avid hunter and invited me out for an afternoon of shooting guns, I quickly convinced Matt that we should also shoot a quick portrait of him and his dog Cash well we were out in the bush.
Matt owns a semi-automatic shotgun and a thirty odd six rifle. The rifle was passed down to him from his grandfather, and packs quite a punch. After a few hours of shooting targets, and Discs our arms needed a break and we set up a couple of different photos. Even though it was a hot fall day he was a good sport and wore full camo for the shoot well trucking around with both his guns and large pack on! I couldn’t be happier with the final image of him and Cash. I have added some photos to this post for you to check out. Squamish Shoot.

I am happy to be writing my first blog update about a portrait this year. I had been chasing action shots so much this past winter that I had forgotten how much I enjoy working with an individual to create a photograph capturing who they are. I met Justin at my summer job (funding the dream) and after a few conversations, I found out that he has been working on finishing his custom Harley and talked him into a quick photoshoot.

I had a few different locations in mind but am glad I choose this one on the day we shot, the low lying cloud added scene of the decommissioned ferry terminal at Shannon Falls just south of Squamish.

I created these shots with a Nikon D3 at f11 , 1/250th of sec, 50mm 1.8 lens , two Elinchrome quadra ranger power packs with one head attached to each, and a SB-800.

The Tower

So I was out at it again, searching for long exposures around Squamish BC. I ended up driving down a nice forest road that popped out at this tower. I believe these shots were about 2 minutes each, with 13 stops of neutral density filters on my Nikon 20 mm 2.8 lens and D3.

Now that the sun is out and the snow is melting, doesn’t mean the excitment of winter is over. In fact I am finding this part of the season just as exciting as the actual shooting. I have been spending tons of time in front of the computer, emailing, editing, selecting images from this past snowboard season. It is really rewarding seeing your whole season neatly tucked into a folder on your desktop, or as I did printed as 4×6 photos.

This is the first of what I hope to be many updates including photos that have made it to print. Lib Tech bought the photo below for a full page color ad in Transfer magazine. I couldn’t be more stoked! A big thank you to Jake, Robbie and Brian for an incredible day shooting photos in the backcountry.

Long exposures

The snowboard season is on its last legs for the year, and my magazine submissions are starting to make their way to photo editors all over the world. Now it is time to slow down and make some photographs over the summer that I have been thinking about through out the winter. This summer I am really going to concentrate on my Black and White long exposures, environmental portraits and food photography. For the food side of things I am going to put my energy into food as art and hopefully have a solid collection of images before long. Environmental portraits have always been a favorite of mine, I really don’t shoot enough of them, and already have a couple in the works. As far as Long Exposures go I am just going to go and shoot every chance I get(when the clouds are just right). Today was one of those days where the clouds were on my side, so I packed up the gear and headed down the highway to Porteau Cove. I can’t decide which out of the 3 images I took today is my favorite so feel free to let me know which is yours.
